When I checked my alexa ranking today, I got surprised by seeing some new changes in alexa ranking. I tried to look at the alexa blog as well but nothing is mentioned there. I doubt that there are some major changes going to happen in the near future as there are some background processes is going on.
Alexa was founded in 1996 and is a most trusted(?) ranking system which ranks the website according to the traffic it gets. It is one of the most popular ranking system after the Google PR.
Getting in the top 100,000 (1 lakk) ranking of the alexa is what all webmasters aims for. Usually alexa shows the ranking according to yesterday, 7day,1 month,3 month average basis. Lower the ranking better is the performance of your website.
If your website average is more than 1 lakh for the day then alexa usually don’t show it in the “Yesterday” ranking (yestrerday ranking row will not appear in the ranking. It will start with 7 day average) but with the new changes you can check your website ranking on the daily basis even if it it more than 1 lakh. Check out the screen shot to check some new changes. They have introduced a new colomn where you can see the last day ranking and percentage of drop/increase as well.
Is it any good?
As a blogger I am happy to see the new changes but meantime I see increase in my alexa ranking from past few days. When I used to get 100-150 hits per day I used to get 70,000-80,000 ranking but now after getting 300-400+ hits per day my ranking is increasing like anything
. If they are changing their ranking algorithm as well then it is good if it becomes more reliable and trusted.
Final thought:
No matter what changes alexa makes it is still one of the most reliable ranking system. Did you notice any drop/increase in your alexa ranking from past few days? Do you think that now is a time for alexa to become more trusted and consistent?

Well Ricky. You misunderstood with the Alexa Ranking. Alexa don’t have a condition to show the “Yesterday” position. There is some more inner method to control how they are showing. You know what. I am seeing the Yesterday ranking once I got 15 lacs rank and at that time I don’t have a 100k position on a single day.
We still need a clear word from Alexa to show how they really rank the sites.

Karthikeyan, this is a general trend that alexa don’t show the ranking of the blog if the ranking is above 100k. But as you said alexa is somewhat unpredictable so you can’t be sure about its ranking system.

Alexa is the best site to check your ranking. But I am still confused with the way they do the ranking. I think they only only take the visitors data but something more than that I suppose.
9:54 am on November 21st, 2009
Well, I do check my Alexa Page on a daily basis and I have been seeing the above changes since last week. However, I have nothing to complain. On the contrary, it is is rather to have more stats about how your blog was ranked over a period of time. I am all for it as long as I’m all set to breach the 100k mark (which I presume won’t take many days). Wish me luck

I Have a long way to go. Still, with a little tweaking I jumped 3000000 spots in 3 weeks. Something is changing with Alexa.

As mentioned on their site i.e.
“Alexa’s traffic rankings are based on the usage patterns of Alexa Toolbar users and data collected from other, diverse sources over a rolling 3 month period.
A site’s ranking is based on a combined measure of reach and pageviews.
Reach is determined by the number of unique Alexa users who visit a site on a given day.
Pageviews are the total number of Alexa user URL requests for a site.
However, multiple requests for the same URL on the same day by the same user are counted as a single pageview”.
I don’t think there is any rocket science. If someone wants to boost his alexa rank, he must increase his technology oriented visitors base e.g. webmasters, technology geeks. Because these are the people who certainly have the alexa toolbar installed….
